The Man Behind the Legend: Chuck's Lifelong Love for Motorcycles
Chuck's journey with motorcycles began at the tender age of 8 when he started riding mini-bikes. His first ride was a basic Sears-type two-wheeler with no suspension, a rear scrub brake, and a lawn mower engine.
After honing his skills on that challenging mini-bike for a couple of years, Chuck landed his first job as a morning paperboy for the Chicago Tribune and later an afternoon route for the Chicago Sun Times. With his earnings, he was ready to upgrade to a real bike. Honda had just released the iconic Honda 50, boasting full suspension, a 3-speed transmission, and a kick start.
At age 10, Chuck dove into the world of minibike racing, eventually competing on a Honda XR-75 and a Yamaha YZ-80 in the mini-nationals across Alabama, Ohio, Wisconsin, Texas, and other states throughout the country.
As he grew taller and more passionate about motocross racing, Chuck graduated from mini-cycles and began racing Honda's groundbreaking CR125-Elsinore, the motorcycle that transformed the sport of motocross worldwide.
The 1970s marked the pinnacle of motorcycle sales globally, and the popularity of motocross soared. Tracks were popping up everywhere, offering endless opportunities for racing and riding enthusiasts.
The movie On Any Sunday, starring Steve McQueen, epitomized the explosive popularity of off-road motorcycling. It was the perfect time to be a rider.
While still in high school, Chuck worked at a Honda/Yamaha dealer in Chicago. Northwest Honda-Yamaha sent him to the American Honda Factory Training facility in Greenfield, Wisconsin, where he earned his certification at age 17 while simultaneously gaining high school credit.
After graduating from high school, Chuck relocated to Arizona and immediately started working at the legendary Cactus Kawasaki on McDowell Road in Scottsdale. Simultaneously, Chuck attended Arizona State University and later Whittier College School of Law (following a year as a Maricopa County Probation Officer) to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer. Ultimately, he discovered his true calling: representing injured bikers and riders of all motorized two-wheelers.
Chuck's passion for racing led him to join the AMA Monster Energy Supercross Series as a local sponsor. To this day, Chuck Franklin Law holds the record as the longest-running local sponsor of the series, proudly supporting it for 20 years.
Chuck Franklin Law was present at the inaugural Arizona Bike Week held in Avondale, Arizona, over 20 years ago and continued to sponsor the event annually for more than 22 years.
Although Chuck had to hang up his helmet at age 55 and bid farewell to racing, his passion for all things motorcycle remains undiminished. He continues to ride on the street, attend motorcycle events, and sponsor them, but the yearning to hop on a dirt bike has never faded.
